I worked for Macy's as the Fine Jewelry Sales Manager for 4 months. I can tell you first hand, they are very deceptive about the quality of all their jewelry, including the diamond jewelry. On top of that, all their jewelry is substantially overpriced and the sales they constantly have don't bring the prices down to anywhere near what the pieces are worth. If you are looking for jewelry, look online. You can get better quality at lower prices because a lot of the retailers deal directly with manufacturers and they don't have as much overhead. Consider www.worldjewels.com for quality diamond jewelry. They have an excellent track record and I've purchased from them myself and have never been dissapointed. Macy's is a rip off, plain and simple.

Becky,

If the goal is a diamond that faces up white, a J(5) can still be acceptable. There are a few problematic areas that's a greater concern for you here than the color (i.e. crown angle, total depth, culet, etc.). Beware!

What is the lowest color grade that would be acceptable for a diamond with the following characteristics? (i.e., Would an I color grade be sufficient for this diamond?)
cushion shape
9.47 x 9.20 x 5.69 mm
4 carat
VS2 grade
depth 61.8%
table size 59%
crown angle 28 degree
pavilion depth 48.6%
girdle thickness: very thin to medium
faceted girdle thickness
culet -- very small

Great advice. I recently sold a ring to TheDiamondLining.com after pursuing some of the auction ideas you presented. My ring wasn't valuable enough for Sotheby’s or Christie’s, but The Diamond Lining made me a very fair offer.

Hi Anonymous,
For starters GIA does not certify any person, place or thing. If you read the disclaimer on the report you will see they don’t guarantee any of the information they provide. If the information they provide isn’t guaranteed then what do you have? I don’t know. But what I do know is the wholesale price for a true hard graded SI2 G well-proportioned 100% natural Fully Bonded diamond is exponentially more than $2500. You can put a homeless man in a business suit but that doesn’t make him a businessman. Just because a diamond is sold with a “lab report” doesn’t guarantee its quality unless it says so. Have a great day! – Fred

Hi Don,
It is in the jeweler’s best interest to keep the diamond as fat, chubby, and spread as possible to make more money. If you would like to research the mathematics in calculating the 65/65 rule just pick up R.W. Ditchburn’s book “Light”. Go to page 226 chapter 8 on the accuracy of optical measurements. Any good diamond cutter by the way can help you in getting a 65/65 diamond or any of the guild stores, Cartier, Graff, Winston, or Van Cleef & Arpels. Since a 65/65 radiant has to be cut from a full term piece of rough vs a macle or flat they are much harder to find. It is impossible to cut a 65/65 radiant from a macle or flat. If you can live with the lower efficiency rating and amplified light return in a 75/75 it can certainly be an option since they are so inexpensive. Have a great day! -Fred

Molly,

It's a radiant that has a total depth % and table % of under 65% cut from a full-term octahedron piece of rough.
