I spent almost 4 unsuccessful months looking for the right breed, size, and age until 2 weeks before the proposal date, which was her birthday – all in the midst of searching for a ring, a place to do it, and setting up the scene for the recording. I must add that keeping it a secret was a real challenge because my fiance and I have been living together for 2 years, and we also commute together. I fed her so much BS to get away from her she actually got quite upset at me some point. All in all, 1 week before the deal I finally got a hold of a dog rescue group that rescued dogs from her home country of Taiwan and managed to get a puppy to have the rock tied to its neck for the big day.

The puppy’s name is Jacob, which I allowed her to name, and he is going to a living reminder to our proposal for the next 15 years on her birthday. He was the bearer of the ring but in essence he is the symbol of commitment, loyalty, and unconditional love. And he, makes us a family.

About a month before Thanksgiving, Steve went into town multiple days in a row to go shopping for my Christmas present. I should have thought this odd and though something was up considering Steve never plans that far in advance, but I didn\’t.

Then, a few days before Thanksgiving, Steve accidentally cut three of his fingers to the bone doing woodwork. It was a very long and emotional seven hour surgery to try and reattach them so that he could use his hand again.

Steve was very emotional and appreciative the next few days for everything had done and all the support I showed through the whole ordeal.

Still without me having the slightest hint, Steve took my parents aside the night before Thanksgiving to show them the ring he had purchased over a month ago and asked them both for my hand.

The next day I spent most of my time in the kitchen with my family. That is until Steve dragged me to the bathroom and insisted that I cut his hair. For some reason it was really important to him to look very nice at dinner that night. He even made me pick out his clothes.

Thanksgiving with my family always consists of at least 20 of my family members and this Thanksgiving was no exception. Before dinner we all go around the table telling everyone what we are most thankful for. My mom insisted that I go first and we go around the table away from Steve.

It was finally Steve\’s turn to speak. He turned to me and began telling me and everyone else how thankful he was to have me in his life, how much he loved me, and how he wanted us to spend our lives together. They were some really beautiful words, but I just figured he was thanking me for being there for him while he was hurt. But then he stood up, reached in his pocket, and got down on one knee…

The next few minutes were such a blur, I had to be reassured that I actually said yes. We began crying, and then my parents and sisters, and soon everyone at the table was crying.

I could never have imagined a more perfect way for Steve to propose and it was even more perfect that he did it in front of my entire family.

I wanted help in buying the same ring either from Graff or Harry Winston. My question was concerning the price of a four carat, D color, VVS1 emerald cut Graff ring or Harry Winston. What is the difference between both these brands and their prices?

Perhaps you can also help out with the terms used in measuring plating. Most times I've had the answer given in mils. I've since learned that the term mils might not be correct as in saying that 1 Micron = 40 mils (platers have told me this for years). My understanding now is that 1 Micron = 40 micro inches. What's a mil and does it apply to plating at all?
