Getting certificate after the purchase

I have been lucky enough to get the proper diamond education before I purchased my fiancees engagement ring. I got a VVS2, I in color, emerald cut 62 point loose stone. I gave in the color characteristic to get the superior clarity expecially needed for an emerald cut. I in color is still near colorless. Who can really see the difference unless its sitting next to a D, E, or F? It also came with a GIA cert.

Here’s my question. My friend was not so lucky. He bought a ring at a large national chain jeweler. He saw my ring with the cert and a separate appraisal document. Now he wants a cert and appraisal document for his ring. The problem is it did not come with either. I would not think that the appraisal from this type of jeweler is worth anything because all they will do is give you a form letter with their usually over priced marked up high retail as an indicator of the value. Also, I believe that only loose stones are evaluated for purposes of creating a cert.

Question: Is there some evaluation service he could pay for to have a cert created for his ring after the fact so to speak? He really wants one for insurance purposes. Somehow I doubt it. If this is a possibility can you tell me who I should direct him to have this done.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Richard, The cert you are referring to are disclaimed by statements like, This document is not a guarantee, valuation or appraisal. No lab certifies any person, place or thing. Labs make no representation or warranty regarding this report or the diamond described. Also no insurance company will write coverage off a lab grading report. IGI will grade a diamond set in a ring. If an appraisal is needed, visit an independent appraiser who will appraise the stone at replacement value not retail replacement value. The Diamond Guy Helper
